Parque das Nações in four stories
In 1998, Lisbon welcomed the world to an Expo dedicated to the oceans. The party ended, the neighbourhood stayed: it's the city's most futuristic side.
Expo 98 marked 500 years since Vasco da Gama's voyage to India and turned an industrial zone into Lisbon's most modern district. The pavilions are still there, full of life.
The Oceanário is one of Europe's largest aquariums: a central five-million-litre tank where sharks, rays and a celebrated sunfish glide by. Set aside a whole morning.
The Vasco da Gama Bridge stretches more than 12 kilometres across the Tagus, the longest in Western Europe. Seen from the cable car, it seems to go on forever.
Here the city is flat, wide and riverside: kilometres of waterfront promenade, gardens, terraces and the Vasco da Gama Tower, one of the tallest buildings in the country.
