Príncipe Real in four stories
All palaces and gardens, Príncipe Real is Lisbon's elegant 19th-century side. And it hides more than it shows. It is one of the calm corners on our quiet map of the city.
At the centre of the garden lives a cedar around 150 years old, trained to grow horizontally. Its canopy, resting on an iron trellis, opens like a parasol 20 metres across.
Beneath the garden hides the Patriarcal Reservoir, a 19th-century underground water cathedral with octagonal pillars. You can visit it through the Water Museum.
The neo-Moorish Ribeiro da Cunha palace, built in 1877, is now Embaixada: a gallery of Portuguese brands with a palatial staircase and a courtyard made for a late-afternoon cocktail.
Next door is Lisbon's Botanical Garden, created in 1878 for the study of botany. Hectares of species from all over the world, in a silence that is rare this close to the centre.

By taxi or Uber it's about 10 minutes. By metro, walk down to Rato and take the yellow line straight to Saldanha: three stops and you're there. The spa is steps from the exit.
