Massage in Alfama and Castelo

Alfama comes from the Arabic al-hamma, "the baths". You're in the right place.

Alfama in four stories

The neighbourhood that began as a spa

Before you relax, it helps to know where you are. Alfama isn't just pretty: it's the Lisbon that existed before Lisbon was Lisbon.

Born from the baths

The Moors named it al-hamma, "the baths", after the hot springs on this hillside. Wellness has been in the neighbourhood's name for over a thousand years. We're just keeping the tradition going. We tell the whole story on the blog.

It survived the great earthquake

The 1755 earthquake flattened most of downtown Lisbon but spared much of Alfama. That's why these are the oldest streets in the city, a medieval maze no urban planner ever straightened out.

A castle with peacocks

Up top, São Jorge Castle has the best view over the Tagus and a resident population of peacocks. On the way up, stop at the Portas do Sol and Santa Luzia viewpoints with their painted azulejo tiles.

The soul of fado

Fado grew up in these alleys, and the Fado Museum sits at the foot of the neighbourhood. In June, Alfama is the heart of the Santo António festivities: grilled sardines, basil pots and street parades until dawn.

How it works

After the stairways, two choices

Tram 28 climbs the hill for you, but the rest of the day is all cobblestones, steps and slopes. At the end of it, decide where you want to relax:

We come to you

We serve hotels and accommodations across the whole hill - from Alfama to Graça, from the Castelo to Santa Apolónia. Narrow streets aren't a problem: the therapist brings all the necessary equipment.

About the hotel service

Or come to us

Frequently asked questions

Massage - Alfama and Castelo

Can you reach accommodations in Alfama's narrow streets?

Yes - we know the hill well. The therapist carries the equipment in a portable format and reaches any accommodation, even where cars can't go. Send your address via WhatsApp.

My guesthouse has no lift. Is that a problem?

Not at all. Half of Alfama has no lift and our therapists climb stairs every day. Just mention it on WhatsApp so we can allow a few extra minutes for setup.

How do I get to the spa from Alfama?

By taxi or Uber it's about 15 minutes to Saldanha. By metro, take the blue line at Santa Apolónia, change at Marquês de Pombal to the yellow line and get off at Saldanha. The spa is steps from the station.

What's the best treatment after climbing to the Castle?

Your feet will vote for reflexology and your legs for deep tissue. If in doubt, tell us on WhatsApp how your day went and the therapist will recommend. You can also add a foot spa to any massage.
