Rossio in four stories
Rossio is the centre of the centre: centuries of history, a sea of cobblestone and the most famous cherry liqueur counter in the country.
The square's wave pattern is called Mar Largo, "the wide sea", and was laid in 1848. It honours the ocean of the Discoveries and still tricks the eye: some swear the ground moves.
A Ginjinha at Largo de São Domingos has served sour-cherry liqueur since 1840, always standing at the counter, always with the same question: with or without the cherries?
The Santa Justa Lift, from 1902, is the work of Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard. Eiffel didn't design it, whatever the legend says, but the view from the top forgives any myth.
Rossio Station hides the trains to Sintra behind a neo-Manueline façade from 1890, with horseshoe-shaped doors. Possibly the prettiest station entrance in Europe.

By taxi or tuk-tuk it's about 10 minutes. By metro, take the blue line at Restauradores, change at Marquês de Pombal to the yellow line and get off at Saldanha. Fifteen minutes, door to door.
There is, and it's a good idea: Sintra has hills too. The spa is 15 minutes from Rossio and a 60-minute session fits nicely before the train.
If the cobblestones wore out your feet, reflexology. If the shopping wore out your shoulders, deep tissue. If it was all of the above, 90 minutes solves it.
