Cais do Sodré in four stories
For decades this was the sailors' rough quarter. Today it's Lisbon's most famous night out, with a river, a market and a design district attached. Walk east and you step onto our quiet map of the city.
Rua Nova do Carvalho was the tough end of the port. In 2011 it was painted pink and became an icon: Pink Street is now the city's nocturnal postcard.
Mercado da Ribeira has fed Lisbon since 1892. In 2014 half of it became the Time Out Market: dozens of stalls from the city's best chefs under one iron roof.
From Cais do Sodré, trains leave for Cascais and ferries cross to Cacilhas. The sunset from the quay, with Cristo Rei in the distance, is one of the city's finest. And it's free.
Next door, Santos is the creative block: design schools, showrooms and old palaces. Lisbon calls it the design district, and it's earned the name.
